What is Sublimation Printing?

Sublimation printing transfers ink as a gas into the fibres of polyester fabric or the polyester coating of a sublimation-ready ceramic mug. The process: a design is printed onto a transfer paper using sublimation inks. The paper is positioned against the substrate and heated in a press at 200°C. The sublimation ink turns to gas (skipping the liquid phase), penetrates the polyester fibres, and bonds at the molecular level.

The result: a photo-quality, full-colour print that’s part of the substrate rather than sitting on top of it. Prints are fade-resistant, won’t crack, and last as long as the substrate itself.

Sublimation vs DTF

Sublimation works only on polyester or sublimation-coated items. DTF works on cotton, polyester, and blends. For polyester sports jerseys and ceramic mugs, sublimation is better. For cotton t-shirts and apparel, DTF is better.
